Oskar Anweiler (+31 October 2020)

On October 31, 2020 the historian and education researcher Oskar Anweiler died at the age of 95. He was one of the co-founders of the International Council for Soviet and East European Studies, today International Council for East European Studies (ICCEES). Thanks to his initiative, the second World Congress of the Council took place in Garmisch–Partenkirchen in Germany in 1980. From 1980 to 1985 he served as president of the Council. He was also vice–president of the German Association for East European Studies (DGO) from 1975 to 1991.

Considered the founding father of comparative educational research in Germany, Oskar Anweiler actively promoted international scientific exchange. In recognition of his commitment to German-Polish scholarly cooperation, he was appointed a foreign member of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 1997 and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Warsaw in 2007.

Oskar Anweilerwas widely recognized for his interdisciplinary openness, his inexhaustible curiosity and human approach. This was evident in the many contacts he kept up until the end of his life as well as in the numerous obituaries over the past few months.
